Biographie

TRAINING: I train five days per week, twice per day, and have Thursday and Sunday off. I do my conditioning in the morning and my striking, wrestling and BJJ at night. After each session I eat and sleep and that’s about it.

Thoughts on opponent, Guto Inocente? I don’t know too much about him. He’s young, athletic, a good kickboxer and has some BJJ skills too.

When and why did you start training for fighting?  I have been doing martial arts for 15 years and have competed my entire career. I started to train and compete in MMA after I received my black belt in BJJ six years ago. I love competition and MMA is a great way to test your skills.

What ranks and titles have you held?  I am a BJJ black belt and have won the Australian title 10 times and won 2 bronze medals at the World BJJ Championships. I have also won the Spartan Australian Heavyweight MMA title.

Do you have any heroes?  Superman.

What is your favorite technique?  Rear Naked Choke.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC?  The UFC is the premier MMA organization in the world. When I started MMA my goal was to make it to the UFC. Now that I am here, my goal is to make it to the top of the UFC.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn?  Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy.

What was your job before you started fighting?  Occupational Therapist (I currently own and run a full time martial arts school with Elvis Sinosic).

  • Took Cro Cop fight on less than a week’s notice

  • Has won eight of his last 12 fights

  • Has finished all 14 of his wins - six by submission (5 rear naked, 1 arm triangle), eight by knockout

  • 3-1 in 2009

  • Of Croatian descent

  • Origin of nickname:  “My nickname is the Hippo. BJJ is my strength. When I get on top of you I am heavy and don’t get off. My training partners started yelling ‘get off me you big Hippo!’”
