Training Style“I’m feeling really good, same as always. I train to win.” Maurice is a firm believer in cardiovascular conditioning and uses the Acceleration Program at the Washington Institute.
UFC HistoryMade his UFC debut against the heavily favored UFC World Heavyweight Champion, Mark Coleman at UFC 14 and won a unanimous decision. He defended the title against Tank Abbott at UFC 15 and made Tank quit from leg kicks. Maurice lost the title by decision to Randy Couture at Ultimate Japan. At UFC 19 Kevin Randleman defeated Maurice by unanimous decision. Maurice returned at UFC 21 defeating Marco Ruas after Ruas could not continue after the first round. “I wanted it to go longer. I don’t want to win a fight by injury. I want to beat the guy but not by injury.”
At UFC 27 Smith defeated hard punching Bobby Hoffman, (Miletich Fighting Systems), by majority decision after three rounds. Hoffman won the first round on all 3 judges’ scorecards, but expended a lot of energy doing so. The second round was much closer, with judge Roy scoring it 10 to 9 for Hoffman, judge Mullen scoring it 10 to 9 for Smith, and judge Ancona scoring it a draw. Smith was dominant in the third round, landing numerous uppercuts on a fatigued Hoffman up against the fence. Judges Roy and Ancona both gave Smith the round 10 to 8, while judge Mullen gave it to Smith 10 to 9, resulting in a majority decision win for Maurice Smith.
Maurice’s UFC record is 4 and 3.
More InformationMaurice is one of the best kickboxers of all time with 56 wins, the majority of those won by KO. He has been the WKA World Heavyweight Muay Thai Champion, and the ISKA World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion. Maurice became the Extreme Fighting Heavyweight Champion, defeating Marcus “Conan” Silviera by TKO and he defended the title knocking out Japanese fighter Murakami Kazunari. Maurice has also competed in Pancrase and RINGS.
On his loss to Kevin Randleman Maurice says, “I didn’t get a chance to do anything. I was sick so I couldn’t fight. I’ll re-match anybody. I didn’t get the beating Bas got. Obviously he didn’t beat my ass. He got like one, two shots. That’s it.”
Maurice’s MMA record is 7 and 3.
“I plan on doing free-fighting (MMA) for a few more years. It’s easier on me than kickboxing.”
