TRAINING: Feed the kids, run to make it to school, hit traffic, go to the gym, punch and smash my friends on the team, go back into traffic, make good food for the kids, play with the kids and go back to Tristar gym to punch and smash my friends.
When and why did you start training for fighting? I started when I was in my teens just for discipline and the workout, but it became full time in my life.
What ranks and titles have you held? No ranks or titles
Do you have any heroes? My family
What is your favorite technique? I love it all...but triangle chokes are always fun!
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It’s a second chance for me to show my skills and myself on this level.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Went to college but no degree
What was your job before you started fighting? Security guard

• Witnessed and survived the harrowing experience of civil war in his native El Salvador (where he and his family lived until he was 11 or so). “My mom fed the army and the guerrillas,” he recalled, noting his family owned a restaurant and ran for cover when gunfights erupted. “It was special, fun and scary at the same time.”
• Though he now fights at 135 pounds, he actually fought Georges St. Pierre back in 2002 at 175 pounds! It was GSP’s pro debut and GSP prevailed via TKO via a terrible and horribly premature stoppage (Menjivar was fine and GSP, honest gentleman that he is, seemed to agree it was an ill-advised stoppage)
• “Here it is heaven” he says of Montreal, the adopted city that he now calls home with his wife and children. He hopes people realize how good they have in developed countries, noting how in El Salvador people often had to walk for hours just to get water.
• Speaks perfect Spanish and is very likeable and humble. Nickname is “Pride of El Salvador”
• Hailed as a pioneer in the sport (fighting since 2001) and quickly earned a crowd-pleasing reputation as one of the sport’s most acrobatic, dynamic and daring fighters. Is not only a top-notch fighter, but also highly entertaining.
