SAN DIEGO — Brandon Vera wrestled one season at Old Dominion University before dropping out of school.

“College and me didn't agree,” Vera said.

Then he installed fiber optic cable up and down the East Coast for a couple of years. Then he joined the Air Force, was appointed to its wrestling team, trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, suffered a nerve injury to his elbow and was granted a medical discharge.
